About baptism
What is baptism?
Baptism is the act of submerging a person in water. It represents the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, and letting go of an old way of living to embrace new life in him. (Romans 6:1-5)
Why get baptised?
Jesus instructed his followers to be baptised as a way of showing their faith and dedication to him. (Matthew 28:18-20)
Who is it for?
Anyone who believes in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour, including children. (Acts 2:38-41) We ask parents not to pressure their children into baptism before they are ready.
Baptised as a baby?
That shows your parents wanted you to live a life following Jesus, which is admirable. We encourage you to take the next step: be baptised by immersion and decide to believe in Jesus for yourself, even if you have followed Jesus for a long time.
When should I be baptised?
Ideally, as soon as you become a follower of Jesus. (Acts 8:34-38)
Who will baptise me?
Usually the leaders of L15. If someone else has played a significant role in your Christian journey and you'd like them to baptise you, let us know and we can talk about it.
On the day
What to wear
Wear something comfortable, dark coloured (so it won't go see-through when wet) and that you don't mind getting wet. We'll give you a dark T-shirt to keep and a towel.
- Underneath: modest, dark clothing such as gym shorts or biker shorts.
- Footwear: you may be asked to go barefoot, so bring slides or easy-to-remove shoes for before and after.
What happens
You don't have to share your story of how you became a Christian, but we encourage you to consider sharing it in person or on video. Baptisms are a great opportunity to share the message of Jesus with others. (Colossians 4:2-6)
Where would I get baptised?
It depends on the weather. When it's warm, we baptise in the sea in Galway. When it's colder, we use a local swimming pool. Either way, it happens just before or just after our Sunday gathering, so your friends and family can be there to celebrate with you. We'll let you know the exact spot closer to the day.
What happens on a baptism day
We keep it simple and celebrate together. The first part usually happens during our Sunday gathering at the Maldron Hotel, Sandy Road, where you can share your story of following Jesus. If you'd rather not speak, that's completely fine: someone can share it for you. Then we head off together to baptise you, in a local swimming pool or in the sea, depending on the time of year. Bring your friends and family. It's a day to remember.
